The first-ever Perspectives Conference was an absolute delight! From the intentional inclusion of well-being sessions, to every topic, speaker and talk, the entire program was compelling from start to finish. Each track was well thought out, and every talk was just long enough to be substantive, and not so long that focus was ever lost. Such a rich blend of voices, too! Excellent!

Welcome to Growing In Content 2024

Presentation 2024-08-19 15:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Inclusive Design Patterns for 2025

When we think of accessibility, we often think about the usual suspects — colour contrast, legible font sizes, and mobile tap targets. However, accessible and inclusive design reaches far beyond that.

In this practical session, Vitaly will take a deep dive into UX and design guidelines, real-life examples, best practices, and guidelines for truly accessible, inclusive design — for both content design and interaction design. Beware: you might see the world differently once you’ve attended this session!

Presentation 2024-08-19 15:30:00 UTC (30 minutes) Decisions over Deliverables

When you’re building your content design career, it gets easier and faster to deliver UX text string after string. But as generative AI improves, you might have a growing sense of dread: It can run faster, deliver faster, deliver more. In this talk, Torrey Podmajersky encourages us to focus on the many things AI can’t do, and make sure we’re developing the right skills, pursuing the right purposes, and nurturing the right relationships to create excellent careers in the future.

Takeaways:

  • The skills that AI can’t learn
  • The purposes we can pursue
  • The relationships we can nurture

Presentation 2024-08-19 16:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Growing in Place—Even When it’s a Place You Hate

Not long ago, the common advice for feeling bored, undervalued, or mistreated at work was simple: LEAVE. But in today’s content job market, moving on feels a lot more fraught. Does that mean you’re stuck in professional purgatory? Absolutely not.

In this session, leadership coach and former content strategy director Jen Dionisio will show you how to find meaning, make progress, and grow right where you are—so you can get the most of this moment and be better positioned for navigating your next job search.

Presentation 2024-08-19 18:30:00 UTC (30 minutes) Thriving in the Everything Everywhere All at Once of Content

Do you ever feel like it’s your job to fix everything, everywhere, all at once? Overwhelmed by the impact of the pandemic, the climate emergency, widening inequality? Wondering what the point is when everything’s so broken?

Content design is a powerful force for good, but it’s not the answer to every problem, and it’s not your job to fix it all.

In this talk, we’ll explore ways to thrive, not just survive, the everything, everywhere, all at once of content. We’ll look at how narrowing your focus can deepen your impact, by embracing limitations, setting boundaries, and focusing on collaboration.

In this session, you will get:

  • A challenge to think about whether you could do more by doing less
  • A framework to help you work out where you can have the most impact
  • Tips on how to power up your collaboration

Additional tips include fostering a safe environment for team discussions, provide sensitivity training, and leverage resources like style guides and readability tools.

Presentation 2024-08-19 19:30:00 UTC (30 minutes) Why Multicultural Content is More Than Translations

"Multicultural content strategy" may sound like "translations," but that doesn't tell the whole story. Words have different meaning in different contexts. With the complexity of translating ideas in different languages, we need to consider how people understand the context so that words are meaningful and accurate. Companies may assume that simply translating their website or marketing materials is akin to having a multicultural content strategy. However, poor translations, counterproductive imagery, and incomplete experiences (such as lacking customer support in the user's language) could increase distrust and frustration in their target audience.

This talk advocates for multicultural content strategies that go beyond translations and consider the intended audience holistically.

Presentation 2024-08-21 15:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Why We Shouldn't Shy Away from Content Governance

For us creative, free spirited content professionals, governance is seen as a restrictive term. It conjures up a bureaucratic culture full of uniformed employees working in formation, being micromanaged for Every. Single. Action. Where constant tick-box exercises are real (not just analogies).

At the heart of everything us content types want to achieve; is the desire to bring more structure to the way content is conceived, produced and put out into the world. But often there is one thing in the way, and that's our intimidation about ‘doing’ the governance part.

I’m going to do my best to demystify and break down some of the complexities of governance, in the hope that it will provide attendees with more confidence about integrating it into their content practice.

Presentation 2024-08-21 15:30:00 UTC (30 minutes) Treating Content Design like a Product Roadmap: How to Win Friends and Influence People

Whether you're an established or newly formed content design team, you'll inevitably face varying levels of organizational buy-in. Some cross-functional partners will sing your team's praises, while others will hum with cynicism. For the former, how do you prioritize their requests for support? And how do you quell the latter's disbelief and demonstrate your impact?

In this talk, Kyle Alexander will share how his team created a content design system roadmap to better educate other disciplines about their strategic value, provide clarity with project priority, and curry favor with design leadership.

Presentation 2024-08-21 16:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Trauma-informed Content Design

Framing design from a trauma-informed perspective works to create experiences where everyone feels safe and supported. By acknowledging that there is no "normal" experience or way things "should" be, and learning to practice radical empathy, we begin to see how other people really feel about interacting with the tools we build. Shaping a strategy from the 6 foundational principles of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), and a well-tested practice of trauma-informed architectural design, we can see how these leading practices can be brought to digital. A trauma-informed approach is about designing with empathy, awareness and, ultimately, love.

Presentation 2024-08-21 19:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Words Matter: Inclusive Content Design Guides

Facilitate bias-free communication with Inclusive Content Design Guides that consider diverse needs, so that you can create a more universal user experience. Barriers to inclusion can happen in isolation but often intersect with other identity points. Failures to make considerations regarding inclusion can often reverberate across the user journey. Words matter and different words hold different meanings for different people. Being more mindful about the language you use is an easy way to make others feel respected, seen, valued, and appreciated. You can resonate with more users by speaking and writing in ways that everyone understands and makes everyone feel welcome.

Presentation 2024-08-21 20:00:00 UTC (30 minutes) Designing Release Notes for Maximum Business Impact

Many product companies view release notes as a mere formality: brief, perfunctory content that serves to provide users the most basic information about new features. This perspective overlooks a valuable opportunity, as release notes can be a pivotal customer engagement tool, promoting feature adoption and enhancing user understanding of the product while driving business goals. In this talk, Stephan will use real-world examples to provide strategies for designing release notes to maximize their value. This session offers design and content teams a new way to delight customers while delivering measurable business impact.
