BMJ is seeking a talented journalist to develop and deliver a content strategy to build and engage an online audience of job seekers in medicine and other health professions. You will have considerable freedom to shape this new role and explore ideas in pursuit of our goals.  

The role will require you to commission, write, and edit content for the job board and to develop and nurture relevant online communities. Reporting to the Director of BMJ Careers, you will lead on all content matters from growing a team of external contributors to sourcing speakers for occasional webinars. 

With our job board going from strength to strength, this role is central to our plans for future growth and you will have a key role in shaping and driving the strategy.

The successful candidate will have a solid track record of producing varied and high-quality content for a professional audience and a good understanding of how to optimise content for search engines. As well as being an excellent writer you are likely to have an interest in using web analytics and other data to develop high-performing content.


  • Writing, editing and proofreading content.
  • Commissioning external writers and illustrators
  • Build a content pipeline to ensure a steady stream of new and/or updated content is published on the job board and published on social media
  • Ensuring all content is independent and meets BMJ’s editorial guidelines
  • Optimizing content for search engines
  • Using web analytics and other data to develop high-performing content
  • Formulating a cross-platform content strategy encompassing a job board, social media and online forums
  • Managing the content budget.
  • Initiate and sustain discussion threads
  • Oversee programme development/speaker sourcing for occasional webinars
  • Meet customers in relation to commercial opportunities involving content
  • Manage BMJ Careers content advisory board


  • Experience in researching, commissioning and writing content for a specific professional audience
  • Creativity and the ability to develop original content.
  • Ability to develop evergreen content with long shelf-life
  • Understanding of keyword placement and SEO best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with content management systems.
  • Experience in producing content for the web and social channels (blog, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc.)
  • Experience with online community building.
  • Experience with social media management.
  • Some knowledge of HTML and web analytics tools
  • Experience in writing for a medical/healthcare audience would be an advantage
  • Good data skills and highly analytical
