Job description

This vacancy is the result of temporary funding through the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). The duration of the funding means the position is temporary and may last for one, two, or three years. Hired candidates may be excessed or non-renewed from the position for the following school year.  

Reports to: Director of Communications 

The Office of Communications is seeking a talented Web Content Specialist with web experience to join our fast-growing and passionate team. As the Web Content Specialist, you will work on reviewing the current website for material in need of updates and content creation, primarily focused on creating and developing written text.  

The Communications team is collaborative and focused on making each other and the work better through creativity and constructive feedback. Your skills and experience will serve the mission of Boston Public Schools (BPS), as your work will be seen across the City of Boston in schools, neighborhoods, and public venues. Both district and school-based websites are critical tools for communication with our students, families, staff and community. We need a platform that allows for consistent communication across websites, that is easy for families to navigate, and easy for schools to customize to meet their messaging needs. All BPS websites will need to follow the same information access guidelines. 

The Web Content Specialist position is responsible for:

  • Supporting the development and maintenance of the Boston Public Schools’ online presence, including web assets, web applications, and interactive media, the management, maintenance, and improvement of the functionality, presentation, and content of BPS websites; 
  • Ensuring the high performance of all web properties, which provide information, drive enrollment, and enhance the reputation of BPS;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for content-based website issues throughout the District’s units and as administrator for the content management system;
  • Regularly update high-level landing pages, adding/consolidating pages as needed, as well as assisting units with content updates including, but not limited to, news and events, people profiles, and program updates;
  • Consistently document content changes, fixes, and issues; 
  • They will build and/or edit content and graphics as needed, monitor and report on web analytics, and proactively recommend improvements. Optimizing individual pages and sites for search is another priority. 

Qualifications - Required:

  • Qualified candidates should have a bachelor's degree in website development, computer science, information systems, communications or a related field and at least 4 years of related work experience
  • Professional experience with web content management and analytics,
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills | Strong ability to manage multiple assignments while working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Fluency in WordPress themes / similar CMS and plugins
  • Experience with SEO, SEM, and website analytics
  • The ability to work well independently, within a team environment and with external vendors as well as a variety of internal audiences
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Content and communications (especially writing) experience is a plus; proficiency in design software applications is also a plus

Qualifications - Preferred:

  • Previous experience in education is preferred
