The Department for Transport (DfT) is a high-profile department at the heart of the government. We plan and invest to make journeys better.

The DfT Content Design Team is responsible for the department’s online presence. The small team manages all aspects of drafting, publishing, maintaining, testing and improving the department’s digital services and GOV.UK content.

You will be a skilled writer and editor with excellent attention to detail. You will know how to write simply and clearly, with the user in mind. You will have the confidence to champion user needs and promote high-quality content design within the department.

Duties and responsibilities

The Senior Content Designer will:

  • create, write, improve, publish, review and manage content for GOV.UK and digital services
  • review and act upon user research, user feedback, analytics and other sources of information
  • collaborate with policy, legal, comms, user research and content design teams in DfT and at other government departments
  • review and provide direction on the work of other content designers and experts from other disciplines
  • help build and improve content design capability across the team and department
  • help build an understanding of content design and the importance of early engagement with content designers across the department

  • create iterate and manage user-centered content
  • make complex language and processes easy to understand
  • coordinate multiple projects and adapt to changing priorities
  • work with stakeholders to understand their issues
  • educate and coach stakeholders on good content design and meeting user needs
  • help build content design capability across the department
  • use analytics, user feedback, and user research to improve the content
  • work to tight deadlines under pressure
  • work with content publishing systems and understand basic HTML and markdown
  • have great attention to detail

Sift and Interview Dates 

  • The sift is due to take place from 30 November 2022.
  • Interviews are due to take place the week commencing 12 December 2022.
  • We will conduct a video interview. We will send you details if you are selected for an interview. 
  • We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert. There may be occasions when these dates change. We will send you sufficient notice of confirmed dates.
