Department Summary

The Marketing & Communications team at Destination DC develops brand messaging and marketing strategy for the product we represent: Washington, DC. Our department consists of graphic designers, content developers, social media specialists, advertising planners, PR gurus, event activators and more. We are responsible for shaping the image of Washington, DC as a top-notch destination for locals, visitors, and convention attendees to enjoy.

Position Summary

Destination DC (DDC) is looking for a Talented writer and editor to join our marketing and communications team dedicated to supporting and positioning Washington, DC as a premier global destination. The primary role of Content Specialist is to execute writing and editing projects as a key member of the creative services team, which includes members of DDC's creative and content teams and serves as an in-house agency in support of company-wide projects and initiatives. You will work on projects that may include writing, editing, and sending emails to various stakeholders, crafting pithy copy for event invitations, contributing content to Washington, DC's Official Visitors' Guide, and more. You will report directly to the Content Manager but will work closely with DDC's Senior Project Manager to execute content projects on time and in brief.

Your day in the life as the Content Specialist may include:

  • Check project management platform Workfront to assess priorities for the week ahead; connect with Senior Project Manager on any projects and questions needed to address projects; connect with Content Manager to share ideas and challenges; begin working on projects (email reviews, content creation, sales collateral, etc.), as needed.
  • Attend a meeting, like the Content/Communications Meeting to discuss and learn about major priorities across the department and org.
  • Study the content style guide; do research needed to complete high priority project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to)

  • Executes a wide scope of deadline-driven content projects submitted through DDC's project management software, Workfront.
  • Manages content on washington.org through Drupal CMS, including researching, writing, editing and publishing.
  • Develops, edits and reviews PowerPoint presentations, including sponsorship decks for DDC's partnerships team, meeting presentations and more.
  • Writes and edits departmental marketing and sales collateral, including one-sheeters, brochures and more.
  • Contributes as writer, editor and/or producer of email communications, such as Member News, American Experience Foundation Newsletter, Meeting News and more.
  • Assists in writing and edits event-related signage, invitations and external communications.
  • Contributes as writer and editor for publications like the Official Visitors Guide, Event Planning Guide and DDC Annual Plan.
  • Pitches stories to the content team that support content marketing strategy.
  • Assists as needed with editing and approving events calendar listings to ensure members/partners and DDC-supported events are comprehensively highlighted.
  • Represents the department at team functions and DDC events.
  • Other projects and duties as assigned by Content Manager and/or Senior Project Manager.

What You Bring: Experience, Competencies & Education

  • Four-year degree from an academic institution in public relations, marketing, journalism, or communications preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working in content marketing, social media and/or advertising.
  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), Drupal a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills including a command of English grammar, usage and vocabulary. Strong writing style and voice; knowledge of AP Style a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills; strong attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Strong proficiency and working knowledge of Microsoft Access and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Travel/Hospitality Industry experience or knowledge a plus.
  • Ability to work as a team as well as independently.
  • The candidate must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
