Job description

In accordance with the Agreement between the Organization of School Administrators and Supervisors (OSAS) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Detroit Public Schools Community District is seeking a talented digital journalist with strong news judgment and news-gathering skills, as well as a passion for education news and audio storytelling. Over the past three years, the District’s Knowledge Management team has built a nationally recognized staff intranet, called the Hub, and recently launched a Student Hub. We work to grow audiences across various platforms including the district’s website and school sites. As a part of this growing work, DPSCD is seeking a Content Manager who will report to the Senior Director of Knowledge Management. They will pitch ideas and programs, write, and execute on our intranet, and work closely to monitor analytics and help us reach our goals.

The Web Content Manager assigned to Knowledge Management would also support District staff engagement and content management and maintenance of the Hub. This includes supporting and working directly with end users, organizational stakeholders, and school staff. They will review and refine content, conduct audits, and provide technical assistance to content managers to ensure continuity of themes, engaging layouts, streamlined navigation and accessibility across the district’s intranet.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent        
  • Minimum three years’ work experience in daily news or publishing organization
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and strong writing skills
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Proactive, organized, and self-motivated with a team mentality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications
  • Experience with content management systems (preferably modern SharePoint)
  • Strategic communications experience
  • Ability to create and execute meetings
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong visual storytelling skills and understanding of web design principles
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet goals and related deadlines
  • Ability to foster effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Availability on weekends may sometimes be required

Essential Functions:

  • Create, produce, and optimize content for use across our intranet.
  • Collaborate with Communications and Marketing staff to advance and tailor stories and other content for a website, social and print platforms.
  • Support the development of sites, applications and pages for staff, student, and family communication hubs.
  • Use real-time data and other sources to drive editorial decisions.
  • Conduct regular audits of the intranet and implement plans to rectify issues.
  • Analyze and draft monthly engagement reports for leadership.
  • Support content development for an expanded knowledge base.
  • Develop strategic memos and proposals for site improvements, provide input on implementation details and implement agreed-upon solutions.
  • Assist with planning, facilitation, and events as needed for Knowledge Management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Security Clearance:

Internal Applicants

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
