Job description

Summary

Content designers help to identify user needs and design content around those needs. They use language and other tools to help people find out or do what they need to, in the way they need to. Putting users' needs at the heart of their work, a content designer makes people's interactions with government as simple and quick as possible.

The core purpose of a content designer is:

  • to understand user needs and design content around those needs.
  • to develop or implement content strategy focused on improving user experience within the context of the department’s objectives.

Job description

A Content Designer helps to identify and match user needs to appropriate content formats, for both information and transaction-based services. They design, create and iterate simple and clear content that helps people get the information they need, in the way they need it.

They develop content strategy and solutions for complex services and other products working with digital and non-digital content.

A Senior Content Designer maps and writes user stories and is responsible for content quality, including reviewing the work of others.

They mentor content designers and may also manage small teams.

They lead on cross-government content projects and engage with the wider government content community.

Responsibilities

As a senior content designer, you will:

  • lead on the creation of content across digital and non-digital channels that meets user needs and business objectives;
  • create clear, joined-up user journeys;
  • evaluate current content strategies based on the results of user research and data, and iteratively improve existing content;
  • help to set and implement style and other standards to create high-quality content;
  • take part in user research and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams including interaction designers and developers to create clear and relevant content;
  • build relationships and work closely with policy, legal and other expert colleagues to make sure content is accurate and consistent;
  • promote user-centred content design within the department and beyond, and give advice on the best content design tools and methods;
  • take responsibility for creating and keeping up a positive and collaborative working environment;
  • help to build a content design community within the department and across the government – for example, by representing DWP Digital at events;
  • contribute to building an inclusive digital culture within the department;
  • be able to manage junior members of the team and support hiring activities for the product design practice;
  • support discussions at a senior departmental level.

This role is based out of our London, Leeds and Newcastle corporate hub locations.

The Department is committed to promoting flexible ways of working, whilst enabling the business to operate at maximum efficiency and will expect colleagues to work from a blend of locations, including some time working at home, as required. The corporate hub location will be the designated place of work and any remote or home working arrangement does not constitute a change to your designated place of work or contractual Terms and Conditions.

The salary for this role based in London is from £54,067 (Band Min) up to £64,656 (Band Max)

The salary for this role based in Newcastle and Leeds is from £49,171 (Band Min) up to £59,589 (Band Max)

For existing Civil Servants normal civil service rules on successful appointment will apply.

Those who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current salary. Existing Civil Servants who gain promotion may move to the bottom of the next grade pay scale or 10% increase in salary whichever would be the greater. Only in very few circumstances (where there have been exceptional skills demonstrated which are in limited supply for example) may existing Civil Servants be able to negotiate their starting salary if the role has been advertised externally, prior to accepting the post.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours, Experience and Technical skills.

Stage 1: Application & Sift

As part of the application process you will be asked to complete a CV and complete a technical content design exercise.

The sift panel will use the information relating to your employment history (your CV) and response to the exercise to assess your ability on the technical skill user-centred content design within the Personal Statement.

When giving details of your employment history, you should therefore include details of the work and projects that you have been involved in, and your role therein.

Applications must include:

  1. A completed Personal Details application form.
  2. A curriculum vitae* with education and full employment history, giving details of key achievements relevant to the skills and experience outlined in this job description.
  3. Personal Statement: Technical content design exercise - details of the exercise are included in the Statement of Suitability section in the application form. There is a 1250 word limit.
