Job description

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience creating content for a technical audience (e.g., developer documentation, computer science course materials, and/or IT admin playbooks).
  • Experience in technologies (e.g., software or hardware systems) by investigation, direct experimentation (e.g., reading or running code) and/or interactions with Subject Matter Experts.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with Information design.
  • Experience with CSS/HTML.

Technical writers plan, create, and maintain educational content as an integral part of the engineering or user experience. The content is often in the form of documentation, but may also be UI text, sample code, videos, or other educational material. Regardless of the content medium, technical writers are distinguished by their abilities to explain complex topics in a way that’s useful to their audience.

The Privacy Technical Writing team, situated in the Core organization at Google, supports a wide range of highly-read, official documents (e.g., policies, standards, guidelines, and practices) representing all areas of user data handling at Google: children's data, health data, audio data, third-party data, and much more.

This unique opening will interact with policy teams that include product managers (PMs), program managers (PgMs), Legal experts, and thought leaders responsible for ensuring that Google's and other Alphabet companies handling of user data meets the regulatory and internal requirements. Policy work may be supplemented by Privacy Engineering projects.

The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Responsibilities

  • Perform individual technical writer reviews for annual policy reviews and policy tracking exercises, as well as peer reviews.
  • Work with subject experts in the Privacy Policy and Readiness team to retire out-of-date content, reposition content that is still helpful.
  • Work with wider Security Engineering Documentation team members to contribute to and improve documentation.
  • Help with Privacy control documentation by contributing to and collaborating with Compliance and other resources to address needs.
