Job description

The Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School seeks a creative, talented, and flexible individual with excellent digital communications skills to join our team. The Carr Center for Human Rights Policy’s mission is to build a more just, peaceful future through human rights research, teaching, and collaboration.

Job-Specific Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Digital Content Specialist is a key team member responsible for amplifying the research and programs of the Center.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop, maintain, and communicate the Center’s brand, style guide, and communications and storytelling strategy and provide creative direction to complement and amplify the Center’s work
  • Design the Center’s annual report, research and discussion papers, and other publications
  • Transform complex data and research into visually compelling narratives and graphics and create innovative multi-media ways in which to communicate the Center’s work
  • Create, build, publish content on, and maintain the Center’s website, including serving as liaison to Harvard Web Publishing and providing training and troubleshooting advice for Carr Center staff
  • Set up and operate the Carr Center’s media equipment, including video, film, photographic, audio, digital, and computer equipment
  • Manage permissions and captioning for Carr Center media
  • Work independently to actively manage pre-production to post-production, planning, logistics, filming, editing, audio, and posting of video, publication, and podcast products
  • Video/audio record and photograph Carr Center events and edit as needed
  • Write and edit content for web and print publications
  • Work collaboratively with the Center’s Communications Manager and Events Coordinator to develop and maintain an editorial calendar and communicate about the Center’s activities

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of related communications experience.
  • Experience with video editing and post-production software, such as Final Cut Pro X and the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Experience must include video development and editing, web content production across social platforms/channels, and traditional communications writing and editing. 

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia/Visual Communications, Communications, New Media, Marketing, or related field preferred.
  • Master’s Degree in related field, a plus.
  • Excellent writing skills, in particular for the web and digital channels; ability to shoot and edit short-form video; strong interest in analytics to measure effectiveness; and background utilizing digital tools and platforms to tell compelling stories that advance marketing, communications and engagement strategies. 
  • This position requires exceptional skills in development and dissemination of targeted multi-media digital content, traditional communications, and customized outreach.
  • Experience operating cameras, lights, microphones and other studio equipment.
  • Creative content creator with the ability to write short narratives, capture photos, and produce short videos and multimedia pieces.
  • Experience writing for the web and social media and experience with web-based multimedia technologies and all aspects of web video and audio production including filming, editing and preparation for multi-channel web distribution.
  • Deep interest in online and social content strategy and relevant analytics.
  • Desire to work as part of a small team, requiring teamwork and a collegial approach to working with others across the Center, school and university.
  • Excellent organizational skills with particular ability to prioritize work in an environment with multiple and conflicting interests.
  • Outstanding attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Sound judgement, flexibility, and intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with multiple internal stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with video-editing software/tools; email platforms; and graphic design software/tools such as Photoshop, lnDesign, Illustrator, and Canva.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility and usability standards, and content management systems (particularly OpenScholar).
  • Knowledge of Google Analytics and SEO best practices.

This position is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire with very strong possibility of renewal.

Note:  Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
