Job description

Hennepin County seeks an excellent communicator to coordinate and create materials about topics presented to, discussed and voted on by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners and support related countywide storytelling initiatives and channels. 

This position will collaborate closely with other communication professionals in the department and subject matter experts across Hennepin County to serve up content and information to commissioner aides, media, the general public, and Hennepin County staff. Candidates with strong organization and communication skills, who enjoy working as a part of a team and enjoy creating multi-channel content are encouraged to apply. 

This position is part of the county’s Communications and Engagement Services (CES) department.

Location and hours:

This position is hybrid and will be performed onsite at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will typically be Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with occasional evenings and/or weekends. 

While this position is designated as a hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in Minnesota or Wisconsin.    

New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:     

Coordinate, write, or edit:

  • PowerPoint presentations and talking points for topics presented to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.
  • Online newsletter stories for commissioner aides to use in their newsletters.
  • News releases and social media content announcing decisions and direction of the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.
  • Content, signage, and event liaising for projects, including those funded by the Youth Sports program.
  • Content related to monthly observances and other priorities from county administration and county board.
  • Hennepin.us web content about board meeting information and priority initiatives.

Need to have:

One of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, mass communications, marketing, media studies, graphic design, photojournalist, telecommunications, visual communications, public administration or a closely related field.
  • Two years of college and two or more years of related professional communications experience.
  • Four or more years of related professional communications experience. 

Nice to have:  

Experience:

  • Working in communications or public relations in support of the public sector.
  • Working under deadlines and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Creating content for publication (i.e., brochures, presentations, reports, websites).
  • Working independently and collaboratively.
  • Photography for the general story and social media use.
  • Using Microsoft Office Suite, Sitecore, SharePoint, Workfront and/or GovDelivery.

Communication and Engagement Services offers strategic and creative services to help connect departments with Hennepin County community members, customers, and employees. The department helps define goals, target the right audiences, and communicate and engage using a continuum of tactics that get attention and meet program and project goals. Specific work areas include community engagement, design and production, digital service, internal and external communication, media relations, resources and training, social media, event and facilitation support, and video production and photography.
