The Content Specialist is responsible for procuring, developing, and correcting new, updated, and existing content for publication in PPI products. The Content Specialist works directly with cross-functional teams, including external SMEs, to communicate key product vision, specify scope, monitor schedules, and report on and solve issues that arise. The Content Specialist reviews all incoming content for adherence to contracted work description and guidelines established in written documents and trainings to maintain PPI quality. The Content Specialist sources and on-boards subject matter experts and monitors their deliverables against project scope, providing timely and accurate feedback to achieve content quality goals. The successful candidate has a keen interest in customer satisfaction and business performance.

Primary Responsibilities:

Content Development

  • Acquire and review engineering and architectural content for quantitative and qualitative relevance, quality, and accuracy against scope.
  • Remain up-to-date on changes in the exam prep market for engineering and architecture. Follow and analyze market trends to determine when content updates are appropriate. Provide input on product roadmap with this knowledge.
  • Develop and enforce quality guidelines that meet department standards and project scope.
  • Using an editorial eye for detail, identify and correct non-subject specific errors and inconsistencies in content that make the content exam-like and easy to understand for students.
  • Use critical reasoning skills to make confident content decisions.
  • Review products prior to release for completeness, accuracy, adherence to standards, quality, and accuracy.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) and Author Management

  • Hire independent contractors (SMEs), and manage them to create high-quality, usable content.
  • Source, vet, and onboard SMEs, including evaluating their knowledge of a subject, walking them through the IC process, and setting expectations about outcomes of each project using calm assertiveness and clear communication.
  • Kick-off product updates with authors by explaining scope, rationale, and timeline. Achieve author buy-in on projects.
  • Work with SMEs and Authors to develop milestones and timelines for projects. Manage SME deliverables against schedule. Work with them to overcome obstacles. Provide ongoing feedback and guidance as deliverables are submitted. Make decisions about discontinuation of work, if necessary, quickly.
  • Award contracts that accurately reflect the scope of project and SME expectations through IC process. Accurately and promptly document awarded contracts to track against budget.
  • Document author relations for future posterity.
  • Continuously grow and maintain network of SMEs. Collaborate on network and share SME resources with peers.
  • Ensure that all SME markup is clear, legible, and submitted using PPI guidelines.
  • Manage SMEs to review customer error reports and fully correct content so that error reports cease, and within the established turnaround time.
  • Work towards established goals of minimizing the number of customer-reported content errors by training SMEs to fully correct content the first time they receive such reports.

Project Management

  • Independently manage projects including all communication with internal stakeholders, and tracking of projects from conception to launch. Often includes written and verbal communication and assessment with external SMEs to determine feasibility of schedule.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, particularly subject-matter experts, to coordinate on tight deadlines.
  • Communicate project status accurately and completely in various weekly meetings. Provide solutions for any obstacles faced by the project.
  • Work within approved budget for all projects.
  • Establish and meet project schedule.


  • Document processes and procedures as assigned. Suggest improvements.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor to achieve organizational goals.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Communications, Economics, Business, English or related fields     
  • 2+ years of experience in content development, content project management
  • Complete assignments within prescribed deadlines
  • Research product needs, current available assets, and possible content acquisition strategies to fill needs
  • Enjoys working both independently and as part of team
  • Ability to effectively and efficiently receive and respond to constructive criticism
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated comfort in working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Deductive reasoning and problem-solving skills, with a strong attention to detail
  • Ability to change focus and prioritize projects based on organization needs
  • Self-starter with high energy and diligent work ethics, demonstrated ability to meet tight deadline
  • Possess strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
