Job description

Reports To:  Project Manager/Customer Success Director

Contract Role: 2-3 months

The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating and writing technical information for a variety of products including web pages, printed documents, and virtual help files. This candidate should have strong communication skills which enable them to explain complicated concepts in a simple manner. This individual will also need strong technical writing skills as well as the ability to gain rapport quickly with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Meet with customer representatives to establish technical specifications and understand the required content.
  • Attend knowledge transfer sessions conducted by subject matter experts (SMEs) and subsequently capture and reflect this by producing technical documentation primarily for technical support teams but possibly for end users.
  • Explain technical ideas in simple language.
  • Expertise to understand and communicate the technical aspects of a digital product to both highly technical and non-technical users.
  • Create technical documentation and facilitate the transition to new systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years experience in the technology industry.
  • 5+ years in a Technical Author/Writer Role.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand highly technical information.
  • Exposure to Banner ERP and/or any HE VLE systems preferred

This project is part of a cross-functional, Agile team effort, working with other technical writers, information architects, SMEs, and stakeholders to identify the right information and convey it clearly and simply will be key. As a help author, you will conduct independent research to determine what the users' informational needs are and what they are trying to accomplish, and then communicate pedagogical and technical information in a way that’s clear and learnable. You will use your research to update existing topics for technical accuracy and effectiveness. You also write new documentation for emerging features, as well as provide feedback on UI choices that influence the documentation experience.

Skills/Experience

  • Exposure in EdTech and other technology-based products and service industry with sustained exposure to, Higher education, and corporate clients in the UK.
  • Cross-functional experience in product management and user experience design, product assessment, writing use cases and user stories for product development, and collaborating effectively with stakeholders, vendors and clients to provide a high-quality experience.
  • Work as an individual contributor with clients' PMO/ PO teams.
  • Collaborate with other Technical Authors where appropriate to ensure all documentation is produced to the same consistent standards, adhering to the agreed technical documentation template.
  • Work under the direction of the client’s line manager, including adhering to schedules and task prioritization.
  • Possess excellent leadership skills and the ability to lead by example.
  • Possess excellent communication and articulation skills -write clear, well-crafted documentation in Standard American English to specifications provided by the client.
  • Exposure to the use of Jira, Zoom, Google Meet, MS Teams, and other tools necessary to collaborate with stakeholders, writers, and reviewers in a remote environment to complete documentation tasks.
  • Knowledge of the CRM backend would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of scripting/coding/SQL at a developer level would be advantageous

Expectations

  • Be competent in the use of Microsoft Office suite, but particularly MS Word.
  • Use of various industry-standard authoring tools such as (but not limited to) ZenDesk, and Robohelp.
  • Be fluent in using Zendesk authoring tools for documenting COSMOS features and task-based processes.
  • Effectively collaborate with co-writers, reviewers, software engineering teams, and stakeholders through all writing phases to produce accessible and learnable user documentation.
  • Demonstrate initiative and reliability in contacting SMEs to conduct independent research, call meetings, raise issues, and provide suggestions, feedback, and advice as needed.
  • Collaborate with product designers/SMEs to produce technical documentation which will result in a higher-quality user experience.
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication strategies, initiative, and a can-do attitude.
