Job description

ABOUT US

Modern Synthesis is a venture-backed startup crafting the next generation of biomaterials by connecting the dots between biology, material science and design.

We’re on a mission to create sustainable materials which reduce the fashion industry’s dependence on petrochemicals - without sacrificing performance or creativity.

Our first material, which is grown by bacteria, is fully biodegradable and astonishingly strong. You can read more about it on our website.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We believe that big magic happens when disparate disciplines, perspectives and ideas collide.

As a team of biologists, chemists, designers, engineers, business experts, robots and microbes, we get to witness this magic on a daily basis. From our strong culture of debate (hot takes always welcome) to our bi-weekly deep dives, we intentionally embed collaboration and growth into everything we do.

In line with this, we’re committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within both our organisation and the wider bioeconomy. The way we see it, a diverse and inclusive team is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s 1+1=3, which not only creates a rich work environment but also makes good business sense.

We hire people, not roles, so we can be flexible on the scope. We strongly encourage you to apply

if you think you’re qualified for a portion of this role and can demonstrate a proven ability to take on new skills and challenges.

As our Content Strategist, you’ll create impact by shaping and sharing our brand story. Working directly with our Co-founder/CEO and Head of Growth, you’ll build out and execute Modern Synthesis’ communications and content strategy.

We’ll count on you to serve as a critical link between our team and the outside world - sharing our vision, values, and progress with a variety of audiences through engaging written and visual content.

Meanwhile, being our eyes and ears to the market, you’ll keep the team abreast of trends and opportunities. Your insights will actively contribute to our ambitious growth trajectory.

This isn’t a plug-and-play position. We're looking for someone who has the ingenuity and drive to build the material brand of the future. No matter your background, you’ll use your impeccable taste and an insatiable curiosity to help us cut through the noise and drive real impact.

This role is intended to start on a part-time basis but could expand to full-time in the future.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as Modern Synthesis’ brand guardian, ensuring best-in-class execution, consistent tone of voice and adherence to brand guidelines across platforms
  • Continually generate new cross-channel content ideas in collaboration with other team members (mainly LinkedIn, Instagram, and newsletters)
  • Craft intelligent and engaging written content, from social media copy to newsletters, distilling complex topics for a variety of audiences.
  • Deliver engaging visual content, by creating it yourself (or sourcing and guiding external talent) including photography, film, graphics, animation and digital media)
  • Update website and all brand-related social media profiles, collaboratively designing and developing site content and layouts
  • Prepare communications materials for events (promotional or fundraising)
  • Actively contribute to wider brand strategy across owned, earned, and paid media
  • Assess the effectiveness of activities in order to identify areas of improvement

Opportunities to expand role scope: We are a small team and welcome candidates looking to grow with us, so this role comes with ample opportunities to get involved in project management, innovation strategy, market analysis, and impact / sustainability management.
