Job description

We operate a hybrid working model and fully support flexibility with colleagues already based across the UK working from home and linked to one of our core locations in Newport, Darlington or Titchfield (Fareham).

For this role you will be linked to one of the core locations, the frequency of attendance at our offices is agreed with you as relevant to your role.

At the Office for National Statistics (ONS), we’re looking for experienced senior content designers. These roles are part of the growth and expansion of our Digital Services & Technology (DST) teams.

As a content designer at the ONS, you will be working to scope, write, edit, proof, clear and publish content that meets user needs. You will also need to reflect user journeys and preferences for a range of channels and audience groups. Researching, developing and analysing audience insight, you will ensure that all content is effective and constantly evaluated.

Using evidence to help make decisions and influence change, you will build relationships with the teams behind everything the ONS publishes, you will lead the creation of guidance, training and materials to ensure that our publications are the best they can be. You will work with user researchers and use evidence, like analytics, to convince people to make user-centred decisions.

This role is part of the cross-government Digital, Data & Technology (DDaT) profession framework. As a role within DDaT at the ONS, we also offer benefits such as:

Responsibilities

As a senior content designer, you will work in our User-Centred Design and Research teams, as part of the agile teams across the organisation. You will have varying responsibilities, including:

  • developing content strategies and solutions for large-scale problems and high-profile projects
  • responsibility for content quality, managing the content design team and mentoring content designers
  • assuring the quality of writing and mapping user stories
  • leading on content projects across the ONS, engaging and contributing to the cross-government content community
  • influencing and managing stakeholders effectively, building long-term strategic relationships, and communicating clearly and regularly
  • creating and iterating processes for improving standards while driving continuous improvement

To be successful in this role you will be able to:

  • lead projects to improve content based on identifying and understanding user needs
  • demonstrate experience of developing content strategies and solutions for large-scale problems, driving continuous improvement
  • lead the design, implementation and evaluation of strategies and policies
  • demonstrate experience in prioritising projects and managing a team effectively
  • work within a strategic context and communicate how the work of the ONS contributes to the goals of both our users and the organisation
  • demonstrate keeping up to date with the latest developments in the field of content design
  • identify the right people to work with, understand their needs and manage strategic relationships with them

In cases where there is a high number of applications the sift pass mark may be adjusted and candidates will be invited to interview in merit order, i.e. those scoring the highest.

Should you be invited to interview, you will be assessed using various assessment techniques aligned to the new Civil Service Success Profiles, where you'll be assessed against any of the behaviours outlined in the advert.

A presentation may be required at the interview. Further information will be provided to successful candidates prior to the interview.

In the current circumstances, interviews will be conducted by Video.

A reserve list may be held for a period of up to 12 months from which further appointments may be made.

Feedback will only be provided if you attend an interview or assessment.
