Primary Purpose:

The Principal Writer & Content Editor plays an integral role in the strategic communications team ensuring the integrity of all Sempra content by penning influential and trustworthy content that advances Sempra as a leader in the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy future. This writer adopts the voice of leaders to draft inspirational and engaging executive communications, including op-eds, speeches, presentations and social media content, for both internal and external stakeholders. This writer must be fluent in energy vernacular, possess a wide and informed vocabulary on critical business topics, and easily distill complex subjects into digestible and compelling content. The writer will need to be uncommonly versatile‚ÄĒa player-coach who can generate engaging drafts that capture the distinct voices and preferences of Sempra's leaders and tailor them to a variety of platforms and audiences while also recognizing that the process remains dynamic and collaborative; an openness to feedback and the ability to channel it into further revisions will be essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Translates executive thought leadership by drafting op-eds, blogs, spotlights, long-form social media posts and other content that help advance Sempra as a leader in the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy future. Incorporates the unique perspectives, backgrounds and voices of each leader.
  • Aligns key messages across communication platforms and serves as a key editor for communications material produced across the department. Evaluates, reviews, and evolves key messages to align with company strategy and industry and media trends.
  • Informs, develops and hones the voice and key messaging for Sempra Foundation. Working in collaboration with the corporate citizenship team, and helping develop strategic communications content highlighting Sempra‚Äôs corporate social responsibility.
  • Develops and maintains comprehensive messaging documents, plans and reports to guide communication on a variety of topics. Partners, consults, advises and implements communication strategies and tactics.
  • Collaborates with the social media manager, brand team and others to develop content for Sempra‚Äôs website and social media profiles.
  • Contributes to internal communications including plans for communicating the company‚Äôs vision, mission and values to employees to foster shared engagement. Assists with the development of talking points for employee town halls, employee videos and other communications.
  • Utilizes brand monitoring software, media distribution platforms and outside agencies to evaluate message pickup, share of voice and other performance metrics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).



  • Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, English, communications, or a related field required.


  • 12+ years experience as a journalist, corporate speechwriter, political speechwriter or in another role devoted to writing.
  • Experience covering or working within the energy sector is preferred.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office two to three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Advise and work closely with C-Suite to gain their confidence as well as that of diverse stakeholders, in defining their communications priorities, providing strategic communications counsel and positively influencing outcomes.
  • Communicate clearly to a wide variety of audiences. Proven track record in developing trustworthy content and storytelling.
  • Ability to take an idea and build it into a cohesive and clear content plan that internal teams and agency partners can execute.
  • Able to convert brand value propositions into narrative-based content/copy; able to distill complex concepts into content that is easy to consume for various stakeholder audiences.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including pristine vocabulary, spelling, grammar and syntax.
  • Fluent in Associated Press style; stay current on trends in business writing (from general mechanics to industry language).
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail.
  • Content marketing experience including both earned and paid channels.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to achieve results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, often on short deadlines.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with senior leaders and peers across functions. Strong interpersonal skills and openness to feedback.

Work Schedule

  • HYBRID: Work a combination of onsite and remote days each week, typically 2-3 days per week.

Sempra offers a competitive total rewards package that goes beyond the base salary. This position is eligible for an annual performance-based incentive (bonus) as well as other merit-based recognition.
