What to Expect

The Senior Technical Writer will fill a key role on the Industrial Product Management team focusing on Tesla's industrial energy storage solutions.

The team is responsible for industrial energy storage products (including Tesla Megapack and Tesla Powerpack) across our three core segments: Utility, Commercial & Industrial, and Microgrid. We focus on maintaining as well as defining and launching new products and applications across global markets while supporting the ongoing development of technical content and collateral for global sales, finance, engineering, and above all, Tesla customers. Our cross-functional team is small and constantly innovating, and you will be one of our key technical members.

As a member of the Product Management team, you will be required to support multiple projects at once, wear many hats, and adapt to a fast-paced work environment. You will work with various subject matter experts across disciplines, including project engineers, software developers, managers, and other technical writers to develop and own content on a variety of battery, power systems, and related software functionality. Content will meet the highest standards of quality for a partner audience and can include a variety of deliverables such as specifications, installation guides, design manuals, owner's manuals, graphics and videos, and API documentation, all of which put the end-user first.

The ideal candidate will not only have demonstrated technical writing experience within a relevant industry but will also have strong project management skills and a desire to define new processes and refine existing ones. 

What You’ll Do

  • Create new content and maintain a range of collateral for our industrial energy storage products
  • Compose concise and targeted technical and instructional content using a variety of authoring tools
  • Prioritize and manage stakeholder input and expectations across the organization, interacting with executives, managers, engineers, and partners
  • Interview and collaborate with product managers, engineers, and other subject matter experts to gather and document information
  • Edit, revise, and transform raw content from a variety of sources
  • Interact directly with hardware and/or software products to understand how they work in order to create content more effectively with the end-user in mind
  • Project manage document creation and update requests, leading regular meetings with key stakeholders
  • Manage and prioritize translation requests and work with translation vendors
  • Develop, as needed, and adhere to a consistent style and formatting guidelines defined by company and department standards

What You’ll Bring

  • Minimum of five years of technical writing experience and/or related professional experience
  • Exemplary communication skills, with a proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Agility and ability to pivot, manage conflicting priorities, drop and take up work as needed, and learn new things
  • Experience creating high-quality content in a fast-paced environment with rapid product iterations and improvements
  • Strong attention to detail; strong personal organization, collaboration, and time management skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members (face-to-face, virtually, and via e-mail and chat)
  • Strong knowledge of content development tools such as DITA-based XML authoring tools, Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Knowledge of graphic editing and rendering tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Keyshot, CATIA Composer, or other 3D authoring and CAD manipulation tools
  • Experience using collaboration and productivity tools such as Atlassian JIRA and Confluence, and the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Deep passion for changing the way we use energy on the electric grid
  • Candidates will provide high-quality writing samples and/or perform a writing test, and must be at least 18 years of age 

Strong Plusses 

  • Experience in the energy industry
  • Mechanical, hardware, or manufacturing writing experience and/or software and API documentation experience
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems
  • Proficiency in structured topic-based (DITA) technical writing including experience with the Oxygen XML editor or equivalent authoring tool
  • Experience communicating instructional procedures with written content as well as images and videos
  • Experience with HTML-based documentation and associated collateral
  • Experience building a terminology database
