Laid off, burnt out, exhausted. That was me in November as I was unceremoniously removed from Slack and ripped away from my team. I didn’t understand why I was targeted when I had increased content design time by more than 25 percent and doubled our team. How could we not be valuable to the bottom line?
In the months since, I have attended workshops, webinars, and talks to keep myself busy but these activities also proved valuable. I reflected on my time in leadership and realized I made some big mistakes. My leadership style is centered around people and collaboration but my organization needed me to also think about and demonstrate business value differently. It’s a tough thing to balance the leadership your team needs and the leadership the business needs. And while I can better recognize my own mistakes, the organization made some too that I should have addressed better from role expectations to gaps in leadership and support.
In this talk, I’ll share my reflections and those of others to help you balance your roles of advocate, practitioner, strategist, rabble-rouser, squeaky wheel, and yes… even a bit capitalist so you can influence the decision-makers.
