Technical Writer – Software Documentation
Location: Onsite Saint Paul MN 55117
Pay Rate: $30.00 – $33.00/hour
Job Type: Contract (W2 or C2C, as applicable)
Position Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Technical Writer to support software documentation efforts for a leading technology team. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in technical writing, knowledge of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), and a collaborative mindset to work effectively with cross-functional teams. This is a fully onsite position offering competitive compensation and the opportunity to contribute to impactful engineering projects.
Objectives of this Role
- Review, copyedit, and update software design documentation and reports using templates
- Implement and educate team members on Quality System documentation and change management practices
- Perform change management for software documentation
- Track and report on documentation across multiple projects
- Collaborate with engineers, managers, and authors to review and adjudicate feedback
- Develop and maintain a unified knowledge base website for the team
- Help create and manage a software requirements style guide and documentation workflows
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities
- Research, create, and maintain information architecture templates for data migration
- Develop and edit content to ensure clarity, consistency, and usability
- Coordinate and schedule technical reviews, and report outcomes
- Maintain well-organized libraries and ensure accurate document versioning
- Track work and tasks in JIRA across individual, team, and project levels
- Monitor a shared inbox and address documentation-related inquiries
- Manage and input data for software requirements and compile into SRS documents
- Create templates, instructions, presentations, and tracking tools as needed
- Disseminate team communications and project updates
- Facilitate collaboration and documentation flow among cross-functional stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
- 2–4 years of experience as a Technical Writer, preferably within a software or engineering environment
- Strong understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
- Ability to learn complex systems and software quickly
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical Writing certification (e.g., STC or university certificate)
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects
- Experience with database management
- Familiarity with SharePoint, Confluence, and JIRA
- Experience with document libraries and issue tracking tools
