Job description

hedgehog lab | Government Projects

This is an upcoming permanent opportunity. The role is not yet live but we expect to be hiring shortly. Register your interest now and we'll be in touch as soon as the position opens.

We're looking for a Content Designer to join hedgehog lab on a permanent basis, shaping the words inside government services so that they're clear, useful, and accessible to everyone who needs them.

This role is for someone who has already delivered content inside live government or UK public sector digital services. It is essential experience for this position. If you haven't yet worked on a public sector service, this particular role won't be the right fit, but we'd still welcome your interest for future openings.

You'll work from evidence, research findings, analytics, and policy documents to write content that guides users through complex processes without confusion or dead ends. You'll push back on jargon, challenge unnecessary complexity, and advocate for the user when stakeholders default to covering-all-bases language.

This is a hybrid role. You'll work from home most of the week, with two days on site at our client's Manchester or Newcastle office, whichever is closest to you. We're looking for candidates based within 50 miles of either location.

Essential experience:

  • You have delivered content for UK public sector or central government digital services. We can't progress your application for this role without it.
  • Experience designing content across discovery, alpha, beta and live phases
  • Fluency with the GOV.UK content style guide and the GOV.UK Design System, and content patterns for transactional services
  • The ability to translate dense policy or legal language into plain English without losing accuracy
  • Experience preparing content for, or working through, a GDS-style service assessment
  • Experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary agile teams alongside researchers, interaction designers and delivery managers
  • Confidence in content critique and the ability to explain your decisions clearly

Desirable:

  • Eligibility for UK security clearance (BPSS as a minimum, SC an advantage), and willingness to undergo it

Why hedgehog lab?

You'll be joining a consultancy with 20 years of experience trusted by global brands, working at the intersection of AI and software engineering. The work is genuinely at the frontier of where the industry is heading, and you'll have the space to grow with it.

To register your interest, please apply via this advert with a copy of your CV and your expected salary.
