Day-to-Day Responsibilities
- Understand the target audience: Know the needs of end users to create user-friendly documents suited to their level of understanding.
- Collaborate with technical experts: Work with engineers, product managers, software developers, and other specialists to understand the product or process that is the subject of the documentation.
- Produce documentation: Write user manuals, installation guides, FAQs, technical sheets, project reports, training proposals, and other forms of technical documentation.
- Use publishing tools: Master word processing software, desktop publishing, screenshot capture, content management, and markup languages such as HTML and XML.
- Manage documentation: Organize, structure, and keep technical documentation up to date to ensure its relevance and accessibility.
- Ensure documentation quality: Review documents to correct errors, improve clarity, and ensure consistency and compliance with company or industry standards.
- Create illustrations and diagrams: Produce or collaborate in the creation of graphics, schematics, and other visual aids to enhance text comprehension.
- Ensure documentation interoperability: Create documents that can be easily translated or localized for different linguistic and cultural markets.
- Test documentation: Validate the accuracy of guides and manuals by testing the procedures and instructions described.
- Provide feedback: Collaborate with development teams to offer insights on potential product improvements based on issues identified during documentation creation.
- Train and support: Sometimes, a technical writer may also be involved in training users or providing technical support by assisting with how to use the documentation.
- Adapt communication styles: Use different levels of language and communication styles to address diverse audiences, ranging from end users to developers. The ability to combine writing skills, technical understanding, and ease of communication with experts is essential for success in this role.
Who we are looking for
- Language Proficiency: Business fluent in written and spoken English; French is a plus.
- Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in technical communication, information design, computer science, engineering, or a related field.
- Experience & Portfolio: Previous technical writing experience in corporate settings, freelancing, or internships; strong portfolio with diverse writing samples.
- Personal Attributes: Proactive, curious, adaptable, and equipped with strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working independently and in international contexts.
- Technical Skills: Familiarity with relevant subject matter and proficient in tools like MS Office, Markdown, Adobe Creative Suite, and documentation software.
- Research & Attention to Detail: Strong research skills for complex topics, keen attention to detail for proofreading, and ability to create visuals that enhance documentation clarity.
