The MGH Institute of Health Professions, the only degree-granting affiliate of Mass General Brigham, seeks an experienced Senior Content Strategist who will help increase awareness of the Institute’s mission and place within the health care system and beyond.

Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer (CCO), the Senior Content Strategist will be a highly collaborative and strategic thinker who has a strong understanding of long and short form story ideation and execution, deadlines, and AP style editing. The Strategist will know how to create compelling content that elevates the profile of the Institute among external audiences, particularly prospective students, but also current students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, and the local community.

The Strategist will leverage faculty expertise into opportunities with external media.

They will also have a keen understanding of social media to help the Office of Strategic Communications (OSC) maximize its strategy, approach, and tactics.

They will assist in posting on Institute platforms.

Primarily responsible for helping manage day-to-day activities, the Strategist will work within the OSC beat system and be responsible for story coverage within certain schools/offices/programs, all in an effort to raise the visibility of the Institute while informing stakeholders of news and developments.

Along with offering counsel, the Strategist will have experience to assist with crisis management if/when the need arises. He/she will also serve as editor of stories before they are posted on the website.

The Strategist will also serve as editor of the semi-annual MGH Institute magazine, assist with oversight of news content posted on the website, and help pitch story ideas to journalists and news outlets.

This is a HYBRID role.

What You Will Do

  • Work with Chief Communications Officer with coverage of faculty, leadership, student, research and alumni stories.
  • Serve as primary copy editor of website stories and magazine content.
  • Utilize faculty database to align expertise with current news and create source sheets that provide potential thought leadership opportunities with external media.
  • Assist in ideating story assignments, web posting, and sharing content with internal (Mass General Brigham and MGH Institute) and external (media) audiences.
  • As needed, post social media content on Institute platforms.
  • Take photos of new employees, update photos, organize photos at events.
  • Assist Chief Communications Officer in ensuring Vitals, the MGH Institute’s central platform for news and announcements, is up-to-date with fresh content and current announcements, events, photos.
  • Write and/or edit feature stories, thought leadership pieces, and media advisories.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with reporters in print/digital and broadcast media; pitch news stories/ideas
  • Create, produce, and edit bi-annual MGH Institute Magazine. Includes assigning/writing/editing stories, identifying photography and art needs, and overall magazine management
  • Assist in managing internal communications
  • Work with OSC colleagues in producing and distributing weekly “The IHP This Week” newsletter. Help edit messages from school executives and departments; assist with distribution. Triage Marcom submissions (event, news, photography, IHP News) and assign to appropriate personnel (OSC staff, interns, grad assistant)
  • Ensure submissions for IHP-TV are posted.
  • Direct, manage, and/or assist in taking photos for OSC stories, IHP events, academic and department website sections. Lead the editing, compiling, and archiving of photos.
  • Supervise activities of temporary employees, interns, or graduate assistants for specific projects.
  • Source, as well as manage, outside vendors for freelance writing, graphic design, photography, printing.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years' experience in story writing and editing.
  • Experience with and knowledge of social media. Proficient photography skills.
  • Strategic thinker who’s not afraid to try new ideas. Strong organizational and technical skills.
  • Multi-tasking collaborator with attention to detail.
  • Self-starter who can work independently. Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint, Word
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications / marketing or related field.
  • Journalism background preferred. Background in higher education preferred.
